Wheel-thrown Pioneer Dark stoneware | 4.75" diameter × 3" tall | Micro paracord hanger | Oregon clay
Bold. Carved. Completely unbothered.
This hanging planter was wheel-thrown in my Portland studio from Pioneer Dark stoneware — a warm khaki clay with natural iron that reacts beautifully with glazes — then left unglazed at the rim to let the clay speak for itself before giving way to Parakeet Yellow below. That band of exposed Pioneer Dark at the top is not an accident. It's a deliberate contrast, a quiet architectural decision that makes the warm yellow glaze pop in a way it simply wouldn't on a fully glazed surface.
The lower body is hand-carved with a dense honeycomb dot pattern — each cell pressed by hand, no two exactly alike, covering the entire lower half in a texture that catches light and shadow differently depending on the time of day. Up close it reads like a garden in miniature. From below it reads like something worth looking at.
The hanger is braided dark micro paracord, twisted by hand to complement the Pioneer Dark clay rim.
At 4.75" wide and 3" tall it's the medium one — perfect for a compact trailing plant, a small fern, or a succulent that appreciates good company. Hang it alongside Soleil for a warm, golden duo that looks entirely intentional.
One of a kind. The honeycomb carving wraps the entire lower body — no two marks land in exactly the same place.
****A note on how this is made:The interior is intentionally left unglazed — raw stoneware breathes in a way glazed clay simply can't, and your plant roots will thank you for it. There are no drainage holes, because this planter is designed to be used with a grow pot nestled inside. Slip your plant in its nursery pot, hang it up, and lift it out easily to water properly and check on root health without ceremony or mess. The bottom is finished with as much care as the outside — smooth, clean, and beautiful — because when something hangs overhead, the view from below matters just as much as the view from across the room.
